The Formula 1 comeback at the Nürburgring was also a race of special events and will be remembered for several reasons: First of all, the British Mercedes driver equalled the previous victory record of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher with his 91st Grand Prix success. In addition, 13,500 spectators celebrated a great motorsport festival at the "Formula 1 Aramco Grand Prix of the Eifel" despite difficult corona conditions, and on the very last lap Max Verstappen set a new Nürburgring lap record with 1:28.139. The spectators went home suitably satisfied after the sunny race day.
Things got particularly emotional after the race: To the applause of the spectators, Schumacher's son Mick gave the reigning world champion Hamilton his father's helmet. "Setting Michael Schumacher's record and then also here at the Nürburgring means an incredible amount to me," said Hamilton. "He's my idol from my youth." Second was Red Bull star Max Verstappen, who clearly enjoyed the race weekend in the Eifel: "The Nürburgring is a great track and I was really happy to race here. I had incredible fun and in the end even the fastest race lap jumped out for me."
The 13,500 or so spectators who watched an exciting race in the stands - in compliance with the hygiene rules developed by the Nürburgring - had just as much fun. Although the Nürburgring had sold a total of 15,000 tickets, more than 3,000 ticket holders came from risk areas abroad or from areas in Germany with a 7-day incidence from 30. These tickets all had to be blocked first. With enormous effort, the Nürburgring was then able, for example through negative corona tests, to enable around 1,500 fans to attend the race after all. "We are really very satisfied," Nürburgring Managing Director Mirco Markfort sums up the weekend. "When you consider that we had just ten weeks to prepare the weekend and only about two weeks to market the tickets, it's a great success. My thanks to everyone involved who made it possible and especially to our whole Nürburgring team."
This weekend, too, the regulatory authorities as well as the public health department had comprehensively controlled compliance with the spectator concept. The behaviour of the spectators - whether at the ticket entrance, on the grandstand or at the snack stand - was considered exemplary by the authorities. "A concept is only as good as those who are willing to comply with it. Our visitors deserve a big thank you," said Mirco Markfort.
