FOR THE RING. FOR THE REGION. FOR THE FUTURE.
As the operating company of the Nürburgring, we are intensively committed to environmental protection and sustainability. Our commitment and our contribution with regard to the current challenges of our time and global efforts are firmly anchored in our corporate guidelines as well as in the understanding of our employees. As a world-renowned racetrack and event location, as well as a private company and regional economic engine, we are always striving to reconcile economy and ecology in order to meet the multifaceted demands.
We are aware that great efforts must be made to protect the environment. Sustainable management also secures our future. We want to live up to our ecological responsibility and have implemented "sustainable thinking and acting" in all organisational levels. We also call on our partners and our community in many ways to deal responsibly with the environment and to act sustainably. To this end, we use all our communication channels and reach millions of people with our messages.
The Nürburgring has already been acting in an environmentally conscious manner for many years, has implemented a variety of measures in different areas and is continuously working on further improvements. Observing and complying with all relevant environmental laws and guidelines is our top priority.
The environmental policy of Nürburgring 1927 GmbH & Co. KG is based on the following principles of action:
- We take responsibility for the environment of our region.
- Our aim is to harmonize ecology and economy.
- We actively and voluntarily pursue preventive environmental protection.
- We try to prevent environmentally harmful accidents and minimize the environmental impact of accidents.
- We inform and motivate organizers, visitors, contractual partners and all users of the Nürburgring to protect the environment.
A short excerpt from our package of measures may illustrate this:
- Green energy for the Green Hell: we obtain 100% green electricity from hydroelectric power plants, invest in solar energy (we currently use the electricity from a 3,500 m² photovoltaic system on the roof of our motorsport experience museum ring°werk) and use intelligent measuring systems for efficient building energy control.
- Expansion of electric mobility at the Nürburgring: our charging point infrastructure for electric vehicles is being continuously expanded. The permanently installed infrastructure is available to our own vehicle fleet, as well as to all visitors and companies. If necessary, additional temporary charging infrastructure is created to meet all requirements here, our ring°kartbahn powered by Wi SOLAR has already been using electric karts exclusively since 2014. This fleet of vehicles is modernised at regular intervals.
- Careful use of water resources: we use precipitation water to flush our sanitary facilities and have our own wastewater treatment technology that is adapted to the seasonal wastewater volumes.
- Responsible waste management and efficient recycling: certified waste disposal and the use of reusable cups with a deposit system are mandatory for all caterers. In addition, the use of fully compostable tableware was tested for the first time at the Media Centre.
- Continuous monitoring of noise emissions: comprehensive noise protection concept with individual noise protection measures, as well as permanent noise monitoring including transmission of data to an independent institute for monitoring emissions. In addition, as a racetrack operator, we voluntarily set a limit sound level below the approved volume.
- Responsibility for the environment of our region: in the middle of the beautiful, hilly High Eifel region - the Grand Prix circuit, Nordschleife and event areas cover a total area of almost 20 km². To compensate for this and to preserve habitats worthy of protection, we manage, with the support of a forestry company, 120 hectares of our own woodland as well as ecologically valuable wetlands and meadows around the Nürburgring.
- In order to preserve valuable areas, there is a close exchange with the region and the communities. This also includes the municipality of Nürburg, which is located directly next to the race track and is a state-recognised climatic health resort.
- A Green Label for Nürburgring merchandise: Part of the Nürburgring fan article range already bears the OEKO-TEX® label MADE IN GREEN. Behind this is a completely transparent production and supply chain process and testing of all textile components for harmful substances. Another important aspect of this award is the safety and social compatibility of the workplaces of all employees and producers involved.
In the future, we aim to integrate more sustainability and transparency into the entire merchandise portfolio and the associated processes, to meet the corresponding standards and to obtain further certifications.
You can find more information about the OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN label here. - PEFC certification for self-commitment to sustainable forest management. PEFC is a transparent and independent system for ensuring sustainable forest management. PEFC certification is thus a kind of global "forest MOT". Wood and paper products with the PEFC seal originate from ecologically, economically and socially sustainable forest management.
We continuously set ourselves new goals and work on further improvements with regard to our fields of action. We are aware that we have to make many more efforts to make the Nürburgring more sustainable and ecological. We face up to this responsibility and tackle the resulting tasks with great enthusiasm. In this way, we would like to make our contribution to ensuring that the Nürburgring is also a place of fascination, emotion and gathering for people from all over the world for many generations to come.
